HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Northridge, CA
We provide independent HeatShield service across Northridge, and the one thing that sets our work apart here is simple: we camera-inspect every liner before we touch it, because earthquake-era patch jobs left a lot of mismatched flue tiles hiding under old HeatShield coats. Most chimney companies in the Valley will recoat on sight. We won’t. That’s the difference. It’s why homeowners from the 1950s tracts off Reseda Boulevard call us first, and it’s why we stand behind every HeatShield repair we do in this city. Call (833) 589-9223 for a free estimate.
Why Northridge Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service
Norm Callaway grew up in Reseda, just south of Northridge, and he’s spent most of his adult life on rooftops within a few miles of where he was raised. He learned combustion, ventilation, and airflow through the HVAC and building systems program at Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills, and he’s been cleaning and inspecting chimneys in the San Fernando Valley for going on two decades. What that means for HeatShield work in Northridge specifically: we know what these post-war ranch home flues look like inside, because we’ve seen thousands of them. We know how a 1963 clay tile liner behaves after sixty Valley summers. We know which earthquake-era repairs were done right and which weren’t. That local depth matters when you’re deciding between a HeatShield recoat and a full reline, because the wrong call costs real money. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not manufacturer-affiliated, so our recommendation comes from what we see on camera, not from a brand playbook. If your flue is sound, we’ll say so. If it isn’t, we’ll show you the footage and explain exactly why. A clean flue doesn’t need selling – it just needs doing right. We also handle full HeatShield sales & service for homeowners who want the resurfacing system done correctly the first time.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Northridge
These are the five failure patterns we see most often with HeatShield liners and coatings in this part of the Valley:
- Spalled clay tile behind the HeatShield coat. Original clay tiles in these 1950s and 60s flues crack after decades of hot-dry San Fernando Valley summers. The tile shifts, the HeatShield coating can’t bridge the new gap, and flue gases find a path into the chimney chase. We see this constantly on the original masonry fireplaces throughout Northridge’s ranch tracts.
- Crown transition cracking from hot fires in decorative flues. A lot of Northridge homeowners burn hot, fast fires in fireplaces that were built for ambiance, not heat. The flue is undersized for that kind of burn. The HeatShield liner cracks right where it meets the crown, every time. We rebuild that transition and recoat properly.
- Mismatched flue tiles hidden under an old HeatShield coat. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, plenty of chimneys got patched without permits. Different tile sizes got shoved together, sometimes just stacked without mortar. A HeatShield coat on top hides that from the top-down view, but a camera from below shows every step and offset. We find these before they become chimney fires.
- Hardened creosote pulling at the liner edge after months of disuse. Northridge summers are hot and dry, and fireplaces here sit idle from March to October. Creosote from last winter’s fires hardens against the HeatShield surface. When that first cool November fire hits, the thermal shock loosens the coating at the edges. We remove the creosote and re-adhere the liner before it delaminates further.
- Critter nests built against the HeatShield surface. Six months of an unused flue is an open invitation for birds and squirrels in the Valley. Nests packed against a HeatShield liner hold moisture against the coating and create a fire load you can’t see from the firebox. We remove the nest, clean the flue, and install a proper cap with a spark arrestor so it doesn’t happen again.
HeatShield Service in Northridge: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the part most out-of-area chimney companies miss about Northridge. The 1994 earthquake didn’t just crack foundations. It took down a significant number of brick chimneys across the older tracts, and in the rush to rebuild afterward, a lot of that work happened without permits or inspections. Homeowners patched what they could afford. Contractors cut corners when the county was too busy to look. The result, thirty years later, is a housing stock where a meaningful percentage of flues have mismatched tile sizes, missing mortar joints, and no spark arrestor at the crown. What does that mean for a HeatShield liner? It means the surface you’re resurfacing may not be the original surface at all. It might be a patch job from 1995 that someone slapped a refractory coat over in 2010. From the roof, everything looks fine. From below, with a camera, you see the step where a 13×13 tile meets a 12×12 tile with nothing bridging the gap, and a HeatShield coat that has hairline cracks at exactly that point. We camera-inspect every HeatShield-lined flue in Northridge before quoting a recoat. Not after. Before. Because if the substrate is compromised, a cosmetic recoat is a waste of your money, and we’d rather lose the easy job than sell you something that fails in two winters.
HeatShield Models & Products We Service in Northridge
We work with the full HeatShield product line as an independent installer and repair provider, sourcing genuine HeatShield liner materials where the system matters. That includes the HeatShield Cerfractory Flue (the cast-in-place liner), the HeatShield CeCure Sleeve Relining System for flues that need a more structural fix, and HeatShield Resurfacing coats for clay tile that’s still sound but showing surface erosion. The distinction matters. On a Northridge ranch home with a 1965 flue that has never been lined, a full Cerfractory cast makes sense. On a flue that got a recoat a decade ago and has minor surface wear, a fresh resurfacing coat is the right call. We don’t sell the bigger job to pad the invoice. Where the brand doesn’t matter – caps, dampers, spark arrestors – we use quality aftermarket parts from Famco and Copperfield, sourced locally for fast turnaround across Northridge. Where the liner itself is the issue, we use genuine HeatShield materials, full stop.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Northridge
Is a HeatShield liner worth it in a 1960s Northridge ranch home with a decorative fireplace?
Yes, in most cases it is – but only if the underlying clay tile is still reasonably sound. A HeatShield resurfacing coat on a flue with intact tile is a cost-effective way to seal surface cracks and prevent flue gas from reaching the masonry chase. If the tile has spalled badly or shifted from earthquake damage, a full reline beats a cosmetic recoat. We’ll show you the camera footage either way, so you make the call with your own eyes.
Why do so many Northridge chimneys have mismatched flue tiles?
The 1994 Northridge earthquake brought down a lot of brick chimneys across the older tracts, and in the rebuilding rush, many were patched without permits or proper inspections. Different tile sizes got mixed in, some were stacked without mortar, and from the top everything looked fine. We find these offsets all the time on camera. If yours has them, we’ll tell you before any HeatShield product goes on.
My flue was blocked on the first cool November night – what happened?
That’s the classic Northridge pattern. Your fireplace sat unused from March through October while creosote hardened and critters moved in. The first cool night in November, you light a fire, and smoke pours back into the living room because the flue is partially or fully blocked. It’s not bad luck. It’s what happens when months of disuse meet an unprotected crown. We’ll clear the blockage, clean the flue, and add a cap with a spark arrestor so next November starts clean. Call (833) 589-9223 for an exact quote – estimates are free.
Do you repair a failed HeatShield coating or replace the whole liner?
It depends on what the camera shows. If the HeatShield coat is delaminating in a contained area and the clay tile underneath is still sound, we’ll remove the loose material, prep the surface, and do a proper recoat with genuine HeatShield materials. If the tile has shifted or spalled throughout, a full reline – either a Cerfractory cast or a CeCure sleeve – beats a patch. We don’t recommend more than the flue actually needs, and we’ll show you why on camera before you spend a dollar.
Can you add a spark arrestor or cap to my earthquake-era Northridge chimney?
Absolutely. A lot of the post-1994 patch jobs we see are missing spark arrestors altogether, which is a fire hazard and a critter invitation. We stock Famco and Copperfield caps and arrestors locally, we install to the correct crown fit, and we make sure the flue is properly sized for the cap, not just whatever was lying around in 1995. It’s one of the simplest upgrades you can make to an older Northridge chimney.
